New videos to harness patient power in cancer treatment

Who better to help patients and their families in developing strategies to cope with the effects of cancer than the patients and families themselves who are experiencing these effects? That is the basis of a new project which has been developed by some of the leading cancer care specialists in the UK.

The aim of the project - being undertaken by a team from Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust - is to produce a series of six patient videos, which will help people to deal with the psychological effects of cancer.

Jean Mossman, recently of leading UK charity CancerBACUP, said: "This series of videos, we believe, will help patients and their families to deal with the psychological effects of cancer. The videos adopt a patient-centred approach - trying to show the real effects of cancer diagnosis and treatment on patients and their families from the perspective of people living through these issues."

CancerBACUP are supporting the national distribution and broadcast of the videos, which will cover topics such as self-esteem, talking to children and sexuality.

The project, which was the brain child of Katherine May, Clinical Psychologist, is being produced through independent production company, Bracklee Productions. Stephen Houston, Consultant in Oncology at the Royal Surrey County is acting as medical advisor on the project, and Joint Solutions Ltd, a healthcare marketing consultancy, are providing business and marketing support.

National distribution and broadcast, including interactive TV, will ensure as wide an audience as possible for these groundbreaking videos that take the patient's perspective in addressing the most difficult psychological effects of cancer.
