June 2001 The Expert Patient The expert patient is a recent
phenomenon set to dramatically change the future of the healthcare
environment. Patients are increasingly taking an
active participation in their own treatment. This has been assisted by the significant increase in
healthcare information available to patients. As a result of the expert patient, healthcare providers
are experiencing a new influenced on the type of care and products they
provide. Although Europe has not yet experienced
the Direct-to-Consumer marketing revolution that has swept through the US,
companies are increasingly focusing on communication with patients. Marketing in the coming years will be
significantly different to historically. Companies able to capitalise on these changes will be in a
